Welcome to the Women's and Gender Studies Department newsletter! I am delighted to share these updates with you about the amazing students, faculty, and staff that are Women’s & Gender Studies at Cal Poly.
CAL POLY PRESIDENT NAMES POLY FEMINIST CLUB OUTSTANDING STUDENT ORGANIZATION
The President’s Diversity Awards celebrate members of the Cal Poly community who have exhibited commitment to the value of Cal Poly’s diversity imperatives. Cal Poly’s feminist student club Triota, was recognized by Cal Poly President Jeff Armstrong as the outstanding student organization for the 2015-2016 academic year.
VISITING PROFESSOR GILDA L. OCHOA OFFERS LESSONS ABOUT DIVERSITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION
While in residence at Cal Poly, as Susan Currier Visiting Professorship for Teaching Excellence Dr. Ochoa participated in and facilitated important discussions about race, class, gender, and education – and challenged the Cal Poly community to “get radical” in confronting the roots of oppression in our society.
SPRINKLE: An UNDERGRADUATE JOURNAL OF FEMINIST AND QUEER STUDIES
Sprinkle is an undergraduate journal created by and for undergraduate students in feminist and queer studies, as well as the broader Women’s and Gender Studies scholarly community. Volume 9 of Sprinkle was published in May and continues to be a rich source of ideas and experiences for its student editors and contributors.
‘ORIGINAL WOMEN'S NARRATIVES (OWN): POWHERFUL VOICES OF STORYTELLING’
During the 2015-16 academic year, students and staff in the Gender Equity Center created and produced Cal Poly’s “Original Women’s Narratives (OWN): PowHerful Voices of Storytelling.”
TAKE BACK THE NIGHT AT CAL POLY
This year, Women’s and Gender Studies minor and Journalism major Alexis McCoy-Caso organized a cornerstone event for Safer as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April: Take Back the Night, which included activities on campus and in San Luis Obispo to raise awareness about sexual violence and domestic violence.
